This is akin to, for instance, the panels of an IDE: where you can have the project tree at the left, a terminal or a debugger at the bottom and some other thing at the right. The side window is a mechanism in which Emacs places buffers as if they were “panels” at the top, bottom, left or right of the frame. I still have to exploit this extensively, and for the time being I am using it only to move certain buffers in a special area, known as the “side window”.

It’s an alist (an association list, think of it like a dictionary or like a map), that maps buffer to how you want those buffers to be displayed. Starting with the display-buffer-alist, as the name says it’s the basic piece of configuration for the placement of the buffers. I’ve taken various precautions to minimise the friction (I have an hydra for other-window, avy and ace-window), but today I want to talk about the last two tools I discovered to mange windows: the display-buffer-alist and the side-window mechanics. Certain commands/modes spawn buffers that completely destroys the layout, or there are modes that likes to mess with your layout (org mode and magit in particular - although these at least revert the changes they made).
